Training the Next Generation of Removal Technicians in Iowa

ree

In funeral service, some of the most meaningful work often happens outside the public eye. Before a visitation is held, before flowers are arranged, before a service is planned, there is a sacred moment of care: the removal and transportation of a loved one.

At Jacobson Professional Staffing (JPS), we believe this first step in funeral care deserves the same level of professionalism, dignity, and respect as every other part of the process. That is why we offer a Removal Technician Training Class designed specifically for Iowa funeral homes.

Why This Training Matters

Removal Technicians are often the first representatives of a funeral home to meet with a grieving family. Their conduct, presence, and skill set the tone for the family’s experience with the funeral provider. When handled with compassion and precision, removals not only provide comfort to families but also uphold the reputation of the firm.

The Rules in Iowa

The Iowa Board of Mortuary Science sets clear requirements for Removal Technicians through rules 645—101.12(156) and 645—101.13(156). Here are the key highlights every funeral home should know:

Education and Training Requirements (101.12):

  • Completion of an approved in-person education program.

  • Instruction on the Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rule, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and Iowa-specific laws.

  • Training on all pertinent equipment.

  • Responsibility to maintain documentation of completed training.

Supervision and Practice Requirements (101.13):

  • Removal Technicians must work under the supervision of an Iowa licensed funeral director.

  • They may perform removals at the direction of a supervising funeral director but cannot act as a funeral director in other duties.

  • Supervising funeral directors must have at least five years of practice, no disciplinary actions in the past five years, and affiliation with a reputable funeral establishment.

  • Registration is required, along with renewal as directed by the state.

  • The supervising funeral director is responsible for ensuring completion of training, directly supervising the first five removals, and monitoring compliance.

  • Removal Technicians must be employed by an Iowa-licensed funeral establishment and complete their first five removals under direct supervision.

  • Prohibited activities include advertising or presenting as a funeral director, and engaging in duties outside of removals.

Hands-On, Practical Learning

Our course blends classroom instruction with demonstrations and scenario practice. Students not only learn the rules, they practice the skills they will use every day. From lifting and cot operation to family interactions at the scene, the training emphasizes safety and professionalism.

Participants also complete the Iowa requirement of five supervised removals, which provides real-world experience under the guidance of a licensed funeral director.

Designed for Funeral Homes

This training is more than a certificate. It is a way for funeral homes to develop reliable team members, improve safety standards, and reduce turnover. By investing in new staff through training, funeral home owners and managers strengthen both their workforce and their service to families.
